TAMKO: A FAMILY BUSINESS
By David Humphreys
I was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1956 to Jay and Ethelmae Craig Humphreys. At the time, my parents were leading and expanding TAMKO, our privately-held family business that my grandfather E.L. Craig started in 1944. My grandmother, Mary Ethel Craig, named the company TAMKO to represent the first letters of the primary states the company was expected to serve—Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
E.L. led his company by exhibiting the values—honesty, integrity, tenacity, dedication to family, and generosity—he held dear. His daughter, Ethelmae, learned those lessons well and put them to use when she stepped in at age 23 to run the business after E.L. became incapacitated by a stroke. With the support of her mother, Mary Ethel, Ethelmae’s keen understanding of people and natural business savvy kept the company growing.
Ethelmae’s husband, Jay Humphreys, was there to help when the family needed him. He led TAMKO for 38 years until his death. His vision for growth and quality products laid the foundation on which the company continues to grow and prosper today. His influence on TAMKO established the culture still in place with the company’s unwavering commitment to “Free Market Principles” and Deming’s “Continuous Improvement.” As TAMKO’s President and CEO today, my role is to continue these commitments and maintain the company’s strong culture of honesty, integrity, and respect.
TAMKO has faced challenges, including economic downturns and natural disasters. But we have persevered and thrived. TAMKO is not merely a business, it is a family business. Every employee at TAMKO is an important part of our culture and works hard to serve our customers. Together, we are building on the foundations established by the great men and women who have been part of the TAMKO team for over 70 years.
A well-run business can provide pathways for employees, not just to earn a living, but to learn and perfect skills, achieve important goals, and build a meaningful life. A great business can also help build communities and industries. TAMKO Building Products has provided all of these pathways for its employees, and growth and opportunity for the many communities where we operate.
